OK, Here we go..... I think it only fair to start with this photo as this trip to Tokyo, and the inspiration of these two guys with me in the photo, really kicked off my interest in exploring food, photographing said eats, and sharing/explaining my impressions of my experiences. So, to you David Chang and Anthony Bourdain, Cheers, and thanks. As I begin I think it only fair to explain a bit of what my purpose with this blog is. As you know, I do not participate in Facebook, and I wont go into why here, but I NEEDED a vehicle to communicate and connect with those in my life, both near and far. As the name implies, this will primarily be a blog about pizza. However, as this is mine, I will feel free to do and say as I damn well please, as it pleases me. So I hope to not offend or tiptoe too far over the line of appropriateness, but if I do, that's just too fucken bad. Enjoy. Pizza, food, life experiences, thoughts, feelings, rants, and more food. This is what you will find here. Please feel free to share and pass along to anyone you think might have an interest, as I hope you will as well. Sincerely yours, DVA

Pizza Man, The South Park Abbey

Japan, May 2014

This is Okayama city

Great city, Great food, Great Sake, Great Whiskey, Great Friends, a GREAT TIME!!!!!

Dinner, after long day of traveling and meetings.  Trains, busses, taxis.  Suit, tie, sweating, meeting.  Many topics covering multiple organizations, various projects spread over the country.

After such a grueling pace let's sit down and roll up our sleeves and enjoy a meal together

Kampai!

This is one of my favorite things in Japan and I WISH that the USA had an equivalent.  When you are ready to order, or re-order, simply press the button and people come running.
From the high end establishment to the low end dive bar, they all have them, and it's great!

(great is gonna be the word for this post and I'm gonna use it to oblivion, so get ready, but know that it'll be great......:-/

The beginning

Various stuff

It tasted great but I have no idea what it was, plus this was 3 weeks ago and at my age it's tough to recall what I ate last night...

Looks like jasmine tea but it was a kind of vinegary and slimy, almost cactus texture.  Strange and not super great, but OK

Sake

There were many rounds during the meal and as always, each round has it's own glass

Fish steamed in a light broth with blanched celery (I think) underneath

Enough food!  Whiskey time!

Smooth and delicious

We killed this bottle and almost ordered another (thank you to whomever cancelled the second!)

Ice for those that prefer.  Not for me, but I don't judge

THIS guy is another story!

I've known him for many years and have never been to dinner or any event outside of work with him.

Antagonist, provocateur, instigator, crazy-guy!, life-o-the party, many words can describe him.

I will simply call him friend, and so much fun

Sashimi plate sort of?

This was the best thing I ate all night, and I don't know what it is.  It tasted like a ginger root served sushi style, over a bit of rice.  A tangy - sharp bite to it, but the perfect sweetness on the back end.  Super Super yummy, really great

Lot's of shit going on with this one.  Clam, egg, stuff, everything.  Great stuff.

And keep in mind that this is still the same meal!  Wowzer!

As Hiroyuki-san would say, this is my sake museum....

Tempura

The yellow thing on the right was interesting.  Like a corn cake frydie-thing

Salt is the suggested condiment.  Works really great.  I think I tried soy sauce as well, was OK

Super light desert, great after lot's of food and drink

We are kind of like a gang...I wouldn't suggest messing with us.  Very international

 On to Osaka

Photos from there coming soon....

Carlsbad Fires, View From Above, May 16th 2014

I was only vaguely aware of the fires that ravaged the Carlsbad area this week while out of town on a business trip.  Near the end of my flight back to San Diego our approach brought us down the California coast and a quite amazing view came into site as we neared the Carlsbad coast.

As you can see the fires appear to be very active still, but at least the Santa Ana winds have subsided bringing cooler gentler winds from the west.

Living inland from this area has to suck.

Sorry Vista, San Marcos, Escondido
