OK, Here we go..... I think it only fair to start with this photo as this trip to Tokyo, and the inspiration of these two guys with me in the photo, really kicked off my interest in exploring food, photographing said eats, and sharing/explaining my impressions of my experiences. So, to you David Chang and Anthony Bourdain, Cheers, and thanks. As I begin I think it only fair to explain a bit of what my purpose with this blog is. As you know, I do not participate in Facebook, and I wont go into why here, but I NEEDED a vehicle to communicate and connect with those in my life, both near and far. As the name implies, this will primarily be a blog about pizza. However, as this is mine, I will feel free to do and say as I damn well please, as it pleases me. So I hope to not offend or tiptoe too far over the line of appropriateness, but if I do, that's just too fucken bad. Enjoy. Pizza, food, life experiences, thoughts, feelings, rants, and more food. This is what you will find here. Please feel free to share and pass along to anyone you think might have an interest, as I hope you will as well. Sincerely yours, DVA

Hillcrest Brewing Company, San Diego, USA, Pizza

This is a brief, mini blog as the focus of my visit to the Hillcrest Brewing Company was to catch up with a friend, and drink some beer.  Little did I know that HBC made pizza as well, oh lucky me!  So I took a few photos and will share them, and my comments, with you here.

I'll FOR SURE be doing a full in-depth review very soon.  I really want to get back there and pick this place apart.  For an initial visit though I was pleasantly surprised.

First of all, awesome beers!  When I was there, there was about 6 of their own beers on tap and another 8 or 10, or could have been more, of other breweries beers on tap as well.  I had about 4 of them, and I don't remember the names (sorry, I'll plug my brain in better next time....promise) and they were great.  I remember a red and a saison, but that as good as my memory gets, right now.

Now to the pizza.  When I asked the bartender what style of pizza they made, he offered that they are compared to Bronx, and many people think they are better.  Instantly I'm skeptical, but I went with it.

Pepperoni pizza please!

So, yes, the pepperoni on it's own was fantastic (I'm talking about the salumi, not the pizza here, just to clarify a bit).  Very large slices, sooo greasy, spicy, yummy.  Wonderful.

The dough however had, and still does, have me a bit perplexed.  Certainly not NY style.  There was no pull, no tooth to the dough.  Yes, thin, crispy on the bottom.   But, like the douches up in Seattle, seems like they are using a bread dough recipe and trying to make pizza out of it.  The mouth feel is like bread, Wonder bread.  You simply bite into it and there it goes.  No Chew.  Please don't get the idea that I am putting HBC in the same category as the Seattle morons.  HBC makes no claim on Naples, or anything else.  They just serve their pizza, and for that they get a thumbs up.

We also had one of their specialty pizzas.  Shrimp, Artichoke, a bunch of other shit, too much shit, kinda killed it.  And, as the focus was chatting and drinking, I completely forgot to take a photo..... duh, I know.  Next time.

Great beer.  A good pizza.  The dough/crust needs work though.  But all in all, I really can't wait to get back there and have another.  I want this pie in my mouth.
DVA
