OK, Here we go..... I think it only fair to start with this photo as this trip to Tokyo, and the inspiration of these two guys with me in the photo, really kicked off my interest in exploring food, photographing said eats, and sharing/explaining my impressions of my experiences. So, to you David Chang and Anthony Bourdain, Cheers, and thanks. As I begin I think it only fair to explain a bit of what my purpose with this blog is. As you know, I do not participate in Facebook, and I wont go into why here, but I NEEDED a vehicle to communicate and connect with those in my life, both near and far. As the name implies, this will primarily be a blog about pizza. However, as this is mine, I will feel free to do and say as I damn well please, as it pleases me. So I hope to not offend or tiptoe too far over the line of appropriateness, but if I do, that's just too fucken bad. Enjoy. Pizza, food, life experiences, thoughts, feelings, rants, and more food. This is what you will find here. Please feel free to share and pass along to anyone you think might have an interest, as I hope you will as well. Sincerely yours, DVA

Ojeda's Mexican Food, TEX-MEX, DeSoto Texas

http://ojedasrestaurant.com/

Yeah, you probably know where this is going, and it's not gonna be good.

But wait!  The Papa John's ended up being OK, for what it was, so just hang on a sec, maybe these goat ropers know a thing or two about some Tex-Mex!

But let's start at the beginning.  Our day has ended early and it's lunch time.  After lunch we are headed to the hotel for the rest of the day, until dinner in about 6 hours.  So let's have a drink!

I'm having a margarita

Nishie-san and Yahata-san are enjoying a Model Especial

The look of this place is actually kinda cool.  Nice old photos on the menus and on the walls giving it a real Mexico feel.  I'm actually kinda into this, at this point.

Three "salsa's" served with chips.

They are, left to right, super spicy (not habanero tho), verde, and mild

The spicy is ok, very spicy, verde is green chili, obviously, and it's OK, the mild tastes like tomato soup.  Couldn't be lamer, more lame, whatever.  It's bad.

So now we order.  Yahata-san has the combination #4 (cheese tostada, Guac tostada, beef chalupa, yep, cha-fucken-lupa), Nishie-san has the chicken mole, I have the carne asada.

Not only are there chalupa's on the menu but there is something called a Puffed Taco?  And the waitress said the sour cream enchiladas are great...  I think I'll pass.

Sour cream enchilada, somehow I'm stuck on that.  Just sounds like bad

Here is Yahata-san's lunch.

yeah, wow, enjoy the photo, I'll be back in a sec....

WTF?  Where do I begin?

It looks like if Walmart said they wanted to open a Mexican restaurant, this is the kinda stuff they would offer.  I wanna say ghetto, but I think that would be too high class for this.  How do you offer this?  Who came up with this?  Gross.

Nishie-san's chicken mole doesn't look half bad, and he said it tasted good, so I'll have to defer to him.  Beans look a little suspect though, just sayin....

Freshly purchased flour tortillas  :-O

And the carne plate.  Now, this wasn't THAT bad, but not awesome.  The steak was grey though, see the last photo, and the beans kinda caught me off guard.  Much different than Nishie-san's beans.  And the cheese is like a velveeta-cheddar hybrid.   Very melty but a "not real" aspect that eludes definition.

Bean comparison

Why?  What?  Confusing

TEX-MEX

The only good thing is that it's in Texas.
A place I do not often visit, so there's a very small chance that I'll have to
run this down my gullet again.

TEX-MEX = don't do it

Real mex = LET'S GO!

Papa John's Spicy Pulled Pork Pizza

The Steelers are on and it's time for a beer and the game.
Well, maybe more than A beer, maybe alotta beers!

What goes best with football and beer?

YES

PIZZA

And I've had way too much of them damn Papa John's fricken commercials lately.  So much so that I need to put that pie in mouth!  And this is the night!

We have no expanded cable but we do have the interweb and a tv in the garage that connects to blah blah blah

enough about that

Beer, smokes, Steelers, let's get that pie on the way!

Dos Equis Amber, por favor

The snackable offered tonight is our honey mustard pretzels

A decent treat while waiting for the hot pork pie

If you didn't get it from the title of this post, this is all about the spicy pulled pork pizza.  I know I know I KNOW, it can't be good, but for $12 it's TOTALLY worth a try.  The absolute worst thing that could happen is a case of the mud-butt in the morning, well worth the risk I'd say.

Here's the dude, Happy Pappy John!

ORDER UP!

 The box....

The pie....  Feels dirty to even call it that

WDSS?

HG also wanted a salad, so why not

Looks pretty lame, and over processed, but it's under $5!!!

Pretty bad from what I heard, I didn't try it though.  Why waste the space?

And here we go....

I do very much love the pepperoncinis, no matter how wilted they are from sweating their asses off in the box with the hot pie.  I still like'em

Closer

CLOSER

YES!!!!!!

Verdict?

I say YUMMM!!!!

The pork is real pork, chunks of it, in a tangy BBQ sauce that contains the perfect level of spice.  Yes, perfect.  Very gently it creeps up on you, caressing your mouth, surrounding your buds, easing it's way down your throat, and then???

it stops           right where it should

Not a punch in the face level spice, nor like a hammer on the head, neither a fist to the gut

More like if Rhett Butler was pissed at you, and slapped you in the face with a pair of gloves held in one hand.  Oh, you'd know that you were slapped, but no mark is left, no sign of the crime.  But you'd feel it, you'd know who delt it as well, and just as fast, the perp is gone.  Like a thief in the night.  Nice.

Don't get me wrong, there will be no Papa John's pizza party at the casa.  But for $12 will I consider shoving my face in this pie??  Hell to the yes!

Eat it!

Spike Africa's, Gaslamp, San Diego, Fresh Fish & Bar

Jury duty is the reason for my presence in the Gaslamp area, otherwise, as those of you who know me well, I would be nowhere near this place.

The previous day I had a lovely meal with a co-worker of mine and two great ladies whom we do business with from time to time, and who also work in the downtown area, and who highly recommended this place.  Whence I came upon it the next day during my two hour lunch break I simply had to try it.

The folowing is my summation...

OK, so, fresh fish and bar.  Let's start with the location.  4th and Broadway, south east corner, prime spot.  Looks fairly new, very comfirtable interior, open and inviting exterior.  A couple of TV's were on and I enjoyed watching the LLWS during my visit.

Here's part of the lunch menu

I realized that I would likely only have this one chance to try this place, based on my eversion to Gaslamp, so I thought I should order a couple of things.

I also realized that I was on jury duty and it was possible that I could be sent to a courtroom later in the day, so I enjoyed an iced tea...   which was standard, nothing special, but refreshing in the heat of days.

Let's have the sriracha shrimp and garlic noodles...

and the blackened mahi fish tacos

Let's break up the decriptions so that it doesn't get too muddled

When the waiter placed the bowl in front of me he said "be VERY careful, this is VERY hot"

I thanked him for the caution and gently eased my way in.  Looked great, smelled pretty good too.  I moved some of the veggies around and spooned up some broth, and......
it was warm.  Not hot, warm.

The first dissapointment of the meal.  It should have been piping hot, just like the waiter suspected it would be.  There were even wisps of steam coming from the bowl, no idea where they came from, honestly, but there they were.  I think the problem is, and many amateur soup purveyors have, is that all of the "fixin's" are kept in the fridge and placed in the bowl after the broth has been poured over the noodles, thus significantly lowering the temperature of the soup.  If you want it to be hot, everything needs to be HOT!

The second dissapointment was the flavor of the broth.  I was expecting shitake ginger broth (just like the menu said) and I got a big mouthful of soy sauce.  It honestly tasted like they just opened a bottle and dumped it in.  Not so awesome.

I didn't stop there tho, one of the best things I ate was coming up, and something that a LOT of ramen shops, amateur ramen shops, in San Diego, just get flat our wrong.

The egg

Just look at it!

This is how you prepare a soft boiled egg to go in a soup.  You have vats of hot broth, COOK YOUR EGG IN THAT!!!  not just hot water, there's no flavor in that.

This was yummy, flavorful, cooked well.

It was actually cooked a little too well, well done that is. But I would much rather have it over done than under done.  I don't want egg yolk soup.  If I do, I 'll go get some chinese food.

It was also a bit cold in the center, obviously right from the fridge.  Flavor was nice though.

Good job Spike!

I just couldn't eat any more

Not wanting to end with a criticism, I thought I'd offer my last main gripe here.

And it's really a shame too.  The black beans, of which I am a huge fan of, tasted terrific.  Big flavor, texture perfect.  The problem is the long soft onion things in the bowl.  WTF is that?!?!?  It felt and tasted, uhm,, well, just weird.  Blech.  Whoever came up with this idea is off the mark.  Not good.  Just do it normal.  There is no need to dress it up, at least not with limp onions strips.

Gross

The tacos were good.  I would have liked to taste the fish a bit more, the mango and guac overpowered it a bit, but the flavor was nice and it all worked well. For $12.95 though, lemmie taste the fish.   WDHS?

What else can I say?

Eat more in Gaslamp?  no, please don't.

Try more new places to eat, something new?  Yes, great idea!  Thanks Claudia and Kelly!
